Special Issue

A collection of articles by the project research network for an extended Special Issue of Journal of Romance Studies 25.3 (2025), 293-530 on ‘Reading bodies: Narrating illness in European literatures and cultures (1870s to 1960s and beyond)’, edited by Katharine Murphy and Olivia Glaze, is now published! With an open access Introduction and ten articles across four language areas (Hispanic, French, Italian and Portuguese Studies), the issue explores representations of illness and medical discourses in literature and visual culture from 1870s to 1960s and beyond. It aims to show the value of a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary and multilingual approach to the medical humanities.

Katharine Murphy’s book, Images of Illness in Spanish Fiction: Sick Literature from 1900 to 1955, is forthcoming with Boydell and Brewer’s Monografías series (2027).
